Mystical Experiences

Conversion Experience

A profound change in one’s way of feeling, thinking, believing, acting, or being; profound change in one’s nature; feeling of being “reborn” or profoundly and essentially changed in one’s being, way of life, or view of the world; a profound change of mind or change of heart.

Mystical Experience

An experience of direct union or communion with ultimate reality; knowledge of the divine, spiritual truth, or ultimate reality attained through direct experience by means other than the discursive, rational intellect. The experience is characterized by an inability to express it fully in words because of its extraordinary quality; an inability to sustain it for long; absence of control of the occurrence; feelings of mystery, awe, and sacredness; loss of ego and a sense of having no boundaries; changes in perception and one’s sense of space and time; strong positive affect (joy, ecstasy, exultation, euphoria, bliss); feeling transformed, and being able to appreciate that opposites are not truly incompatible.

Peak Experience

A very significant, meaningful experience that may be characterized by a sense of heightened perception and great understanding (including a strong sense of deep knowing, appropriateness, and belongingness), very strong positive affect (intense joy/ euphoria), transiency (relatively short-lived and intense), feeling fulfilled/actualized.

Plant Mystical Experience

An experience of. temporarily, identifying/merging with a plant so closely/so fully that one seems to lose one’s own human identity and “become” the plant; may lead to greater identification with/respect for the Earth/other life forms.

 

Transformative Experience.

A profound change in one’s nature; feeling of being “reborn” or profoundly and essentially changed in one’s being, way of life, or view of the world; a profound change of mind or change of heart.

 

PSYCHIC EXPERIENCES

Clairaudience

A faculty for hearing sounds, music, or words that are not normally heard by others at the same time, especially when such “mental hearing” allows one to access information that can be verified later in more conventional ways.

Clairsentience

A faculty for sensing or feeling, in any sensory mode, something that is remote from the regular senses; the sensations or feelings can later be verified for accuracy.

Clairvoyance

A very significant, meaningful experience that may be characterized by a sense of heightened perception and great understanding (including a strong sense of deep knowing, appropriateness, and belongingness), very strong positive affect (intense joy/ euphoria), transiency (relatively short-lived and intense), feeling fulfilled/actualized.

Direct knowing

Having an experience of immediate or direct inner knowing; knowledge that is not mediated by the conventional senses or by rational thought. Similar to revelation or gnosis, this direct knowing is often accompanied by a strong inner feeling of conviction or of the truthfulness of what is known.

Extrasensory perception (ESP).

A general term to indicate knowledge or perception of what is beyond the range of the regular senses; accurate knowing of what is remote or normally inaccessible to the conventional senses— e.g., what is behind a barrier of substance, at a great distance in space, or at a great “distance” in time. ESP may take the form of telepathy, clairvoyance, or precognition.

Out-of-body experience

An experience of perceiving or observing the world or one’s physical body from a point of view outside of the physical body; one’s center of consciousness may seem to be in a spatial location other than that occupied by the physical body.

Synchronicity

“Coincidence” that seems much more than mere chance and which is accompanied by a feeling of meaningfulness or purpose; close correspondence in time of events that are meaningfully related, but for which such correspondences would be difficult to explain in terms of ordinary principles of causality (cause and effect). The events that enter into the “coincidence” could be psychological (thoughts or feelings) or physical (things, occurrences).

Telepathy

Direct knowing of another person’s mental state, thoughts, feelings, sensations, or images, when such knowing cannot be accounted for by ordinary means (such as sensory knowledge or rational inference); transference of thoughts; sharing of thoughts. The literal meaning is “feeling from afar.”

Unorthodox healing

Healing (facilitating health, wholeness, or well-being) or curing (helping to bring about a change in some physical condition) by unconventional means such as laying on of the hands, psychokinesis, faith healing, spiritual healing, mental healing, divine healing, psychic healing, or psychic surgery.

Xenoglossy

Speaking an actual foreign language that one does not know or has not acquired through conventional means

ENCOUNTER-TYPE EXPERIENCES

Ancestors encounter

Encountering, through what seems a vision, sound, or other “sensory” means, the presence of what seems to be one’s own ancestors, or the ancestors of others or of humanity, when such ancestors are no longer alive.

Angel encounter

“Sensing” or feeling the presence of what seems to be an angelic being. Apparition (of the living). A visual paranormal appearance, generally spontaneous, that suggests the real presence of someone who is alive, but whose “real” physical body is elsewhere, at a distant location.

Peak Experience

A very significant, meaningful experience that may be characterized by a sense of heightened perception and great understanding (including a strong sense of deep knowing, appropriateness, and belongingness), very strong positive affect (intense joy/ euphoria), transiency (relatively short-lived and intense), feeling fulfilled/actualized.

Apparition (of the dead)

A visual paranormal appearance, generally spontaneous, that suggests the real presence of someone who is dead.

 

Demonic encounter

“Sensing” or feeling the presence of what seems to be a demonic being.

 

Divine encounter

“Sensing” or feeling or knowing what seems to be the presence of the divine, a god, a goddess, or other divine being.

Folk entity encounter

“Sensing” or feeling the presence of what seems to be a being familiar in the folklore of a culture— e.g., the “little people.”

ET encounter

Sensing” or feeling or knowing what seems to be the presence of an extraterrestrial being.

Ghost encounter

Encounter with an apparition that is observed more or less regularly over a period of time in a specific house or locality and which sometimes conveys accurate information about the former history of the locality.

Night terrors encounter

Feelings or great fear, panic, or physiological agitation, during nocturnal sleep.

Possession encounter

The experience that one’s body, activities, or mental activity or contents are under the control of another agency or center of consciousness.

Sense of presence encounter

“Sensing,” feeling, or knowing what seems to be the presence of an alien being or realm; there may be physiological accompaniments of the experience (e.g., chills, feeling of coldness, prickly feeling of the skin).

UFO abduction encounter

An encounter with what seems to be an extraterrestrial being in which one feels abducted, and typically, forced to submit to invasive procedures; sometimes, there is a feeling of lost time associated with the experience.

UNUSUAL DEATH-RELATED EXPERIENCES

Deathbed experience

Apparent awareness of the presence of deceased relatives or friends and/or an altered state of consciousness such as exaltation on the part o f a dying person.

Near-death experience

An experience reported by a person who almost died or had been declared dead (due to absence of vital signs) but “recovered.” The experiences tend to form a pattern that may include all or most of the following: feeling detached from one’s body (an out-of-body experience), having an experience of a tunnel or moving in a tunnel, having an experience of light, having the experience of seeing luminous beings, entering realms of ineffable bliss, having a panoramic recollection of one’s entire life, encountering beings such as deceased loved ones or otherworldly messengers.

Past-life recall

Having specific memories of one’s experiences or other occurrences in a previous time and place which suggests that one may have lived a prior life as another person.

Phantom phone call (at time of or after death).

Receiving a telephone call in which the voice on the other end seems to be that o f a deceased person, especially at the moment of death or shortly after the time the person died; the person receiving the call may or may not be aware that the other person is deceased.

EXCEPTIONAL HUMAN EXPERIENCES

Aesthetic experience

An encounter with beauty in any form (such as art, music, or nature) that has a significant impact upon the experiencer, such as highest happiness, spiritual insight, or personal transformation.

Creativity

Expressing something new, original, and valuable, as though one is a channel for something greater or some greater potential is working through one. Deja vu. A profound feeling of familiarity in the presence of what is not really familiar; a feeling of having seen this before or done or heard this before, although part of one knows one is having the “real” experience for the first time.

Exceptional performance

Exceptionally skilled or unusual performance that is accompanied by a sense of effortlessness or flow and a seeming drawing on deep, but not previously accessed, potentials; the activity seems to be performing itself.

Peak performance

Exceptionally skilled or unusual performance that is accompanied by a sense of effortlessness or flow and a seeming drawing on deep, but not previously accessed, potentials

 

Special dreams

A dream that has a significant impact upon the dreamer, such as the highest happiness, spiritual insight, or personal transformation.
